Who can become a tutor?
You can!
You can help an adult learner achieve his or her goal of reading improvement
if you are:
-
At least 18 years old,
-
Have completed high school or an equivalent
program,
-
Can read above the 8th grade level,
-
And have the
patience and desire to help another adult.
Tutors must complete a tutor
training workshop and have time to prepare lessons and to meet with an adult
learner about two hours per week for a one-year period.
When
we receive your registration information, one of our staff
members will contact you to set up an hour-long discussion
at which you'll learn more about tutor training and being
a tutor.

OTHER
WAYS TO SUPPORT THE LITERACY COUNCIL

The
Literacy Council also relies on volunteers to help in many
ways other than tutoring.
-
The
Board of Directors is composed of area residents who want
to help govern the organization.
-
Volunteers
are needed to help keep the student computer lab up and
running.
-
Office
volunteers assist by cataloging the library, preparing
mailings, collating training materials and other special
projects.
-
If
you are interested in these alternative volunteer opportunities,
please call The Literacy Council at 815-963-7323 or email
us at read@theliteracycouncil.org.

| Not everyone has the
time to be a tutor, serve on the Board, or volunteer in another capacity.
You can also help by making a donation
to bring reading skills to low-literate adults.
The Amazon Honor System collects online donations
for us, charging a very small fee, and deposits them directly into The
Literacy Council's bank account. The fee is a fraction of the cost required
to set up our own website security to accept donations directly. The Amazon
Honor System is secure and respects your privacy. |
