classes and programs offered by The Literacy Council are

Private
tutoring is available
for adults who need help with basic reading and writing
skills and for those who are learning English as their second
language. An interview and assessment help Council staff match
each adult learner with an appropriate tutor and study materials.
Tutoring is held at convenient places in Rockford as
well as in Loves Park, Rockton, Belvidere, Byron and Oregon. |

Small classes
are available to adults who read above the third
grade level and for those learning English as their second
language. Professional teachers lead these classes of 10
or fewer students. Adult learners enjoy the interaction
with other students in the classroom. |

Family programs join
parents and their children in fun reading activities.
Parents learn how to help their youngsters grow into strong
readers. Children receive a free book. Reading
for Family Fun night is held monthly at libraries
across the region. READy to Learn
for parents of infants and toddlers is held weekly
at a variety of community locations. Parent
and Child Together meets for families with preschoolers.

English
as a Second Language instruction is offered
to adults in small classes or with a private tutor. Lessons
cover real life language skills needed to communicate at a
child's school, on the job, at the doctor's, and other everyday
situations. 18 different language groups enrolled at The
Literacy Council in 2003. |
| Support
services for adult learners include workshops
and conferences, referrals to other community resources, an
Adult Learners Group that meets monthly, and Project Write
On for creative writers. |
